Rocket Arm, Relentless Competitor: The Marauder Career of Quarterback Tim Garcia
When you look back at the great quarterbacks in University of Mary history, the Tim Garcia era stands out for one simple reason: every time he stepped on the field, the Marauders expected to win.
Armed with a rocket arm and a fierce will to compete, Garcia led UMary to 19 wins and two NAIA playoff appearances in just two seasons—tying the school mark for the most victories over a two-year stretch and cementing his place among the all-time greats.
From Modesto to Mary: A Perfect Fit
Garcia arrived in Bismarck in 2002 after two seasons at Modesto Junior College in his hometown of Modesto, California. The transition from Central Valley heat to North Dakota cold didn’t slow him down.
From the moment he took over under center, the Marauders offense took off.
2002: Making Noise Immediately
In his junior season, Tim wasted no time making his mark:
- Led the Marauders to a 9–2 overall record
- Guided UMary to a DAC-10 championship with an 8–1 conference record
- Helped the team advance to the NAIA Elite Eight
His numbers were as impressive as the win-loss column:
- 2,629 passing yards – the second-best single-season total in school history at the time
- 181 completions on 309 attempts
- 29 touchdown passes with just 5 interceptions
His signature performance came in a wild showdown with Valley City State University:
- Threw for a school-record 473 yards
- Tossed six touchdown passes, another school record
- Led Mary to a 40–34 victory
- Earned conference player of the week honors, the first of two such awards in his career
It was the kind of game that perfectly captured who he was as a quarterback: fearless, explosive, and clutch.
2003: Back-to-Back Elite Eight and MVP Honors
Garcia’s senior season in 2003 proved that 2002 was no fluke.
Once again, he steered the Marauders to:
- A 10–2 overall record
- An 8–1 conference mark
- Another trip to the NAIA Elite Eight
In the opening round of the playoffs, UMary defeated Azusa Pacific 20–2, with Garcia once again directing an offense that could control the game through the air.
His individual stat line in 2003 mirrored his junior-year excellence:
- 193 completions on 300 attempts
- 2,525 passing yards
- 29 touchdown passes with just 6 interceptions
For his consistent excellence and leadership, Tim was named DAC-10 Most Valuable Player, a recognition of how indispensable he was to the Marauders’ success.
Climbing the Record Book
In only two seasons, Garcia compiled career numbers that still stack up against the best to ever play the position at UMary:
- 5,154 career passing yards – second all-time in Marauder history
- 58 career touchdown passes – also second all-time
- Overall team record during his tenure: 19–4
Those numbers tell the story of a quarterback who not only filled up the stat sheet but did so while leading his team deep into the postseason—twice.
Life After Mary: Still Leading on the Sidelines
Garcia didn’t leave the game behind when his college career ended.
- He graduated from the University of Mary with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education.
- Returned to California, where he became a physical education teacher and head football coach at Central Valley High School in Ceres, CA.
- Continues to pour into young athletes the same competitive fire and love for the game that defined his time in Bismarck.
Off the field, Tim and his wife Danelle are raising their daughter Hannah, adding the role of husband and father to his list of life’s most important titles.
Why Tim Garcia’s Legacy Matters
For current players and alumni, the Tim Garcia years are a reminder of what can happen when talent, preparation, and belief come together:
- A rocket arm capable of stretching any defense
