Some players leave a season. A few leave a legacy. Jon Ahneman did both.

When the Bismarck native arrived on campus in 1992 after graduating from St. Mary’s Central High School, he stepped into a young University of Mary football program that was still writing its early chapters. By the time he finished his career in 1995, Ahneman had helped turn Marauder Football into a conference champion and national contender, while carving his own name deep into the record book.

Immediate Impact: A Freshman Champion

As a freshman in 1992, Ahneman wasted no time making an impact.

That season, the Marauders captured the first conference title in school history, with Ahneman already emerging as a force on the defensive line. His presence up front helped set the tone for what would become one of the most successful stretches in program history:

  • 1992: Conference champions
  • 1993: First-ever NAIA playoff appearance
  • 1994–1995: Continued winning seasons and postseason pushes

By his senior year, Ahneman led the Marauders to an 11–2 record and a run to the NAIA national semifinals, finishing the season second in the nation. For a program still in its early years, that kind of climb was remarkable.

The Backbone of the “Fearsome Four”

Ahneman’s coaches described him as having a tough-minded leadership style—playing every snap with the same relentless intensity.

He wasn’t alone in that approach. Together with Scott Muir, Steve Clooten, and Jason Aman, Ahneman anchored what became known as U-Mary’s “fearsome four.” That group defined Marauder defensive football in the early 1990s: physical, disciplined, and unrelenting.

Even within that talented front, Ahneman stood out:

  • Voted the team’s Defensive Lineman of the Year
  • Earned all-NDCAC honors as a junior
  • Set a then-team record with 14.5 sacks in that junior season
  • Voted team captain as a senior
  • Again earned all-conference honors in his final year

Still in the Record Book

Nearly three decades later, Ahneman’s name is still etched into the Marauder record book.

  • He ranks fourth in program history with 24 career sacks
  • He continues to appear among the leaders in career tackles and career sacks

His induction into the Marauders Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 simply confirmed what teammates, coaches, and opponents already knew: Jon Ahneman is one of the standard-bearers for Marauder defensive football.

Life After Football: Caring for Others

Like many Marauders, Ahneman took the lessons of discipline, toughness, and leadership from the gridiron into a life of service.

  • Graduated from the University of Mary in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Earned his Master’s in Nurse Anesthesia from Texas Wesleyan University in 2002
  • Today practices as a Board Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at CHI St. Alexius in Bismarck

His wife, Keri, is also a registered nurse at Mid Dakota Clinic, and together they’ve built a life rooted in family, faith, and community. Married for over 18 years, they have two daughters:

  • Maddison, a student at St. Mary’s High School
  • Maren, a student at Cathedral

For current players and alumni alike, Jon’s story is a powerful example of what it looks like to translate greatness on the field into meaningful impact off it.

A Legacy That Still Shapes Marauder Football

Ask around the program today, and you’ll still hear Ahneman’s name—whether it’s in a film room pointing out a record, a weight room conversation about past greats, or a coach reminding a young defensive lineman what it looks like to play every snap with full-throttle effort.

From:

  • Freshman champion in 1992
  • To “fearsome four” leader
  • To Hall of Famer
  • To healthcare professional and family man in Bismarck

Jon Ahneman remains a powerful reminder of what it means to be a Marauder: tough, selfless, and dedicated to something bigger than yourself.
